Clean up your bedroom for spring

Clean up your bedroom for spring

The bedroom should be cleaned particularly carefully, as dirt and dust can also affect sleep quality by causing congestion. By washing your bedding regularly, airing out your bedroom, and keeping fluff at bay, you can enjoy sweet dreams with peace of mind.

We've put together a checklist to help you get your bedroom spotless.

Wipe the walls and doors thoroughly, as they accumulate a surprising amount of dirt. Clean surfaces gently with a mild detergent and a soft cloth. Wallpapered walls are not resistant to water, so they should be vacuumed or wiped with a soft cloth.

Wipe light fittings. It's easy to forget to wipe the ceiling lamp in the rush of everyday life. Turn off the lights and make sure that they have had time to cool down before you wipe them gently with normal detergent and a cloth.

Wash the windows. Clean windows bring light into the bedroom. Spring is an excellent time for washing windows: you shouldn’t wash outer windows in freezing temperatures to avoid the cleaning solution from drying on the glass too quickly.

Wash pillows and duvets. Pillows should be machine-washed 3-4 times a year, and duvets 1-2 times a year at 60°C. Fluff your bed linen during the drying process or use a tumble dryer. Make sure that your bed linen has time to dry properly, especially if you will store it.

Vacuum and turn the bed. Don't beat the bed with a carpet beater: vacuuming and airing out the bedroom will freshen the bed. Rotate the bed regularly lengthwise so that the load is more evenly distributed on the spring system. This will extend the lifespan of the bed. A box spring mattress can also be turned upside down. Make sure to check regularly that the bed legs remain firmly screwed onto the frame. To prevent damage to the attachment of the bed legs, never pull on the bed when moving it.

Vacuum the mattresses and wash the covers of the top mattresses. Special filling and foam mattresses stay fresh when you air and vacuum them regularly. Do not beat the mattress with a carpet beater, as this may damage the cellular structure of the high-quality foam. Regularly turn the mattress lengthwise and upside down at least 3-4 times a year to distribute the load more evenly over the filling. Removable top mattress covers can be machine-washed at 60 degrees.

Clean the rugs. Air your rugs outdoors or vacuum them. Summer is the best time for washing your rugs, because that's when you can get outside. The more industrious wash their rugs at home.

Organise your cupboards and drawers. When things are tidy, your mind is calmer. Go through your bedside cabinet drawer and wardrobes: are there any unnecessary items? Store your winter clothes and recycle unnecessary items.

Ventilate. Once the bedroom has been cleaned, leave the room to air out.

Remember the everyday measures, too.

  • Open the window every morning and leave your bed uncovered for a while to air it after sleep, to allow any moisture absorbed into the bedding to evaporate.
  • Fluff pillows and duvets daily or at least a few times a week to keep the bedding fluffy.
  • Change the bottom sheet and pillowcase every 1–2 weeks, and the duvet cover every 2–3 weeks to clean ones.
  • Wash the sheets as instructed at 60°C with similar colours, inside out. Wash dark bedding separately when washing it for the first time. Always remember to wash new bedding before use.

Is it time to replace? Remember to replace your bedding regularly.

  • Pillow every 2 years
  • Duvet every 4 years
  • Top mattress every 4 years
  • Mattress every 6-8 years
  • Box spring bed and mattress every 8-10 years
